I've recently been enjoying Vanska's fresh account of the Fourth [BIS] where he uses Bruckner's 1888 score - rejected by many critics. Haitink sticks with the trusted Nowak second version for this June '11 edited Barbican recording. It would be hard to choose between them: a question, I suppose, of heart vs head. Vaenskae has the leaner-sounding (Minneapolis) orchestra but is more exciting in parts; Haitink has richer textures at his disposal and there's a steady unfolding of the work, with touching detail. His authority in Bruckner is unquestionable. The finale is of course difficult for any conductor - and many critics! Abbado/ Lucerne is another fine modern option.
