A reunion, as pianist Donald Brown gets together, for the first time since 1986, with two other alumni of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers for that year. On a flying-high 'Just One Of Those Things' Wallace Roney's trumpet sets the pace alongside the alto sax of Kenny Garrett, who galvanises the band into headlong urgency. Then there's a contrast as we hear, instead, Ravi Coltrane's long-legged, loping tenor and the tangy guitar of Mark Boling. With Robert Hurst on bass and his son Kenneth Brown splitting drum duties with Marcus Gilmore, the pianist revives some of the go-for-broke grooving sound of the old Blakey bands, like a fresh wind blowing in your face.
