Technics SL-P1200 CD player

The problems Technics faced when entering the CD player market were covered in our Vintage Review of its SL-P10 model [see HFN Oct '12]. Obliged to divide its resources in order to help JVC with the development of the VHD and AHD disc systems and having no fewer than 18 turntables in its portfolio, it was perhaps no surprise that parent company Matsushita's first step into the rapidly moving field of digital audio was a cautious one. Events would soon show CD to be the dominant audio format for the foreseeable future, and so Technics rapidly followed the SL-P10 with further players, including one whose appearance truly set it apart.
