In Steve Sutherland's fun account of Bill Graham and the Fillmore auditoriums in San Francisco and New York [see HFN Apr '13], he gets one part of the story wrong. He recounts Graham using the Winterland Arena after Fillmore West closed in July 1971. In fact, Graham used the Winterland - advertised on flyers as a ballroom - from 1966, typically for acts that were likely to draw larger crowds. What's more, for the first six months of 1968, The Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead and Hells Angels sponsored a number of concerts at San Francisco's Carousel Ballroom. When that didn't work out, Graham used the opportunity to take over the venue in July and market it under the name Fillmore West.
