Fact number one: you don't need multichannel reproduction for a satisfying sonic experience. Often, two channels are more than adequate. Fact two: sometimes, monophonic is preferable to stereo. This second fact was driven home for me recently when I agreed to help a friend who has long complained about the sound quality of her home entertainment system - a large flat-screen television yoked to a generic surround-sound system. This friend is deaf in one ear and has difficulty understanding the dialogue in most TV shows, a problem made worse by the prevalence of spatial enhancements and needless detail engineered into film and broadcast soundtracks.
