From 1976 (live), this is the strongest Brahms First we have from Tennstedt -his LPO label concert version from 1992 is more loosely structured. We tend to think of his repertoire as Austro-Cerman (which predominantly it was) but his recordings include Kodaly, Prokofiev, Ravel, Shostakovich and now Martinu. This Fourth Symphony, a studio recording in good stereo, made (1973) not long after he left the GDR, is well worth having for its commitment and orderly character; indeed, Martinu can sound just too 'busy' in the hands of other conductors but Tennstedt makes it all seem logical.
