To present his company's wayward but nonetheless chart-topping charges, The Rolling Stones, with four gold discs apiece to confirm that the band's last quartet of American albums had each made more than a million bucks. It was a piece of staged theatre designed in cahoots with the band's maverick young manager Andrew Loog Oldham, to make absolutely sure that the press understood that this troublesome bunch of scruffy urchins were equal peers to The Beatles and not some fly-by-night opportunists about to crash and burn.
