What made Dare so refreshingly different as a mainstream pop record - and an album entirely of its time -was its bountiful use of analogue synthesizers, drum machines, sequencing and programming. The studio equipment employed by producer Martin Rushent read like a 1981 annual of hi-tech instrumentation. Rushent, who died in June 2011, was a veteran engineer who had worked on records by T Rex, Yes, and Emerson, Lake And Palmer, and later went on to produce well known punk bands such as Buzzcocks and The Stranglers. After expressing a desire to move away from guitar bands he became an ambassador for The Human League's 'synthpop' sound, buying a Linn LM-1 drum machine, a Roland MC-8 Microcomposer and a Jupiter-8 synthesizer to learn sequencing.
