Along with Bonnie Raitt, Block possesses a reverence for rural blues, with a hint of Chicago, that shows the testosterone-driven practitioners a thing or three. But the song on this set that rips out my heart is 'The Last Leviathan', which is a profoundly deep ode to the planet's largest denizens in peril - just voice and synthesizer. As for the rest, the usual Rounder Records recordings with a natural sound, uncoloured vocals and realistic space.
