I am enjoying your new 'Buying Vintage' series, particularly the comments made on direct-drive turntables in the October issue. I bartered a digital SLR for a Technics SL-110 some years ago and have been very happy with it. By way of example, my friend also has a vintage turntable, this time a belt-drive design from a British manufacturer. 'Doesn't it sound lovely?' he said. 'It's playing too fast!' I replied. I was horrified by the primitive approach to resolving the problem, which entailed opening up the power supply and adjusting a variable resistor with a screwdriver while comparing the speed of the turntable to the same track on CD.
