Like several other landmark jazz albums, Time Out was recorded at Columbia's 30th Street studios in New York. The producer was Teo Macero, a formidable musician, composer and arranger, who'd studied with Edgar Varese and co-founded The Jazz Composers' Workshop with Charles Mingus before joining Columbia in 1957. As a producer, of course, Macero would ultimately become most famous for his long association with Miles Davis. At the recording controls was Columbia's eminent chief engineer Fred Plaut, who'd built his own recording studio in Paris before moving to the US in 1940. He went on to make hundreds of classical recordings for the label.
