At last January's International CES, attending journalists were instantly aware that the interconnected car was 2015's great leap forward. Major automakers all had concept vehicles on display, each equipped with more electronics than a NASA launch centre. Guided via GPS, the self-driving car was a science-fiction fantasy fulfilled. The rebound wasn't long in coming. In late July, Fiat Chrysler announced the recall of 1.4 million technology-laden vehicles, following news that hackers had penetrated the dashboard operating system of a Jeep Cherokee, achieving control of 'the engine, the brakes and the steering,' according to Aaron M Kessler of the New York Times.
