Many good turntables come as complete, ready-to-run packages that just require minor set-up before they can be used. Nevertheless, some listeners like to experiment, matching decks and arms from different manufacturers to achieve a sound closer to their individual tastes. In recognition of this, Technics made some of its direct-drive models available as 'motor units', ie, just the motor, platter and plinth - no arm. These models tended to come from the upper end of the company's range, but here we have a more basic offering: the unassuming SL-150. This model first appeared in 1975 and was also available with a factory-fitted arm as the SL-1500 and SL-1700. The SL-150 could take a variety of arm models, but after some success with the previous SL-110 it was the SME 3009 that was favoured, the deck coming ready cut to take one with the minimum of fuss.
