Fashions change. This stupidly obvious observation should be repeated like a mantra by anyone who's ever bemoaned the tastes of the new generation. Photos of beach-goers from a century ago look quaint not only for their faded sepia tones, but for the impractical garb worn for frolicking seaside - layers of fabric for women, knee-length black woolen singlets for men, garments that when saturated must have been heavy enough to pull their wearers beneath the waves. If the term was used back then, 'swimwear' must have had ironic implications. No-one now would wear anything like that, except in jest. And no-one would assert that such cumbersome garments were better for their apparent purpose than the sleek hydrodynamic creations worn today.
