Do cables make a difference in the performance of an audio system? This old question has rankled the high-performance audio community for decades. Textbook engineering types have long looked at the claims made by cable manufacturers and equipment reviewers, and over the years have launched many challenges to establish the veracity of such claims, including proposals for large-scale double-blind listening tests. No such effort has ever gotten very far, although it would be useful for creating a statistical baseline - who can hear what, under what conditions, with what types of music, and what if anything about a cable's materials and construction makes a truly repeatable improvement.
