In 2009 Sennheiser rediscovered its mojo with the launch of the HD 800 [HFN Oct '09], which suggested that the company's engineers were on a mission to throw off old shackles and establish a new benchmark. It is joined now by the £ 1200 HD 800 S, a breathed-on version that offers the option of balanced connection. Just how different are the 800 and 800 S? Cosmetically nothing has changed but for the exterior metal parts of the S's capsules having a matt black rather than silver finish. As before, stainless steel gauze and engineering plastic feature in the construction and the 56mm driver remains. According to Sennheiser, it's 'the largest ever used in dynamic headphones'
