Taking part in some recent research at Cardiff University I was told I had above average hearing, especially for my age (63), but loss of high frequencies above 4kHz was evident. Unfortunately, the tests were done the day after I attended a Crosby, Stills & Nash concert and I was still experiencing some ringing/tinnitus. Testing rather more crudely at home weeks later with the HFN test CD, Adobe Audition and headphones there was some good recovery up to 8kHz, but 10kHz and above appears to be a distant memory. Attending the excellent Hi-Fi News Windsor show in October last year I noted that many visitors were of a similar vintage to my own. This prompted discussion about the loss of high frequencies and the benefits of high resolution recordings of 96kHz or 192kHz/24-bit, etc. Clearly I cannot benefit from the high frequencies stretching out to 40kHz and above. However, I believe I can still sense more ambience around instruments from some hi-res recordings.
