Last summer, the Australian trumpet virtuoso was joined by singer Dianne Reeves in a Proms evening celebrating Dizzy Gillespie and Ella Fitzgerald. Recorded in Melbourne a couple of months earlier, this Ella & Louis programme has Patti Austin stylishly putting over Ella's repertoire, right back to 'A Tisket, A Tasket'. Instrumentally, Morrison does much more than pay tribute to Louis, for example tearing off an amazing Dizzy-ish solo on an exhilarating Latin 'Lullaby Of Birdland'. Austin has done '(If You Can't Sing It) You'll Have To Swing It (Mr Paganini)' before, but this time, with the help of the sumptuous Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, it's a triumph.
