The fact that the LP celebrated its 70th anniversary this year was highlighted in our 2018 Yearbook. It's a landmark many would not have imagined possible a decade or two back. Yet for a hard-core of audiophiles, myself included, the 33.3rpm LP is, and always has been, the mainstay of our music listening. Introduced in 1948, it superseded the 78rpm disc quite quickly and even had a rival in the form of a young upstart a year later: the 45rpm single. For a while, a very gentlemanly kind of format war took place, before the 78 faded away and the LP and single learned to co-exist happily.
