Global truck market seen to rebound by year's end

The global medium- and heavy-duty commercial vehicle market is expected to grow slightly through 2018, per the latest forecast issued by IHS Markit. The research firm stated that truck sales have "shaken off" first-quarter weakness and are now expected "to rebound to a new unit-sales peak by the end of the year." The forecast, which covers worldwide sales and registrations of trucks over 6 tons gross vehicle weight (roughly equivalent to U.S. Class 4-8 combined), says global truck demand is on track to approach 3.2 million new vehicles sold, up a projected 1.6% from 2017s record-setting 3.1 million units. IHS Markit said most major markets are "supporting the upswing," including India (projected to be up 18% from the prior year) and Eastern Europe (up 16%). "Headwinds, meanwhile, are coming largely from China, the world s largest truck market, albeit somewhat less than before."
