The development of an evaluation protocol, and the subsequent establishment of reliable procedures for measuring workplace air, qualify have been described in Part 1 of this series. This Part examines the further development of protocols and standards for ambient and indoor air applications. These developments have been channelled principally through standardisation committees CEN/TC 264/WG 11 and CEN/TC 264/WG 13, but ISO has also been involved. Evidence is now accumulating that diffusive sampling, provided proper controls are in place, can have measurement uncertainties similar or even better than conventional techniques, but more evidence is still needed to convince the scientific community and particularly the legislators of the value of this technique.
