The days of as detecting canaries are, thankfully, long gone. Industry now demands precise, multi-dimensional monitoring to protect their personnel and facilities. Despite the significant advancements since the time of the miner-and-canary team, gas detection technology was still very much in its infant stages less than a quarter century ago. In the Alberta oil patch in the 1980s, an average of 20 to 30 workers lost their lives each year due to the effects of hazardous gases, with major injuries scoring even higher. Tragically, the majority of these accidents could have been prevented were it not for the limitations of the technology at the time.
