The chemical industry (chemical-using and chemical-manufacturing) is indispensable to modern-day life, and chemicals are the basic elements of modern life for textiles, industry, food production, Pharmaceuticals and building materials, contributing significantly to growth in other industrial sectors. The Canadian chemical industry contributes more than $3.7-billion to the economy, and creates over 50,000 jobs. Both the United States and Canada have umbrella organizations representing the numerous chemical facilities. The U.S. has the American Chemical Association (ACC), which represents 180 chemical companies, while Canada has the Canadian Chemical Producers Association (CCPA), which represents over 70 chemical manufacturing industries with over 200 plants across Canada. Both associations have introduced Responsible Care~R initiatives for members ― global efforts aimed at addressing public concerns about the manufacture, distribution, use and disposal of chemicals.
