The former Welmet Industries Limited site (at 1 Albert Street, Welland, Ontario) has had a long history of heavy industrial manufacturing use. Originally built sometime prior to 1906 as a foundry, it switched to manufacturing marine equipment such as stream dredges, derricks, shovels, hoists and suspension cableways until approximately 1918 when the manufacturing of cargo ships was initiated. From 1964 to 1984 the site was once again retrofitted and commenced making steel and stainless steel casings, and valves made from nickel and iron.
