Continuing its annual peregrinations around England, Pira International settled on Newcastle-upon-Tyne as the venue for its 20th Dangerous Goods Update Seminar, which took place this past June 22 and 23. Attendance was at a lower level than in previous years, although why this should be is difficult to gauge. Pira had invited a broad panel of speakers and their presentations included some subjects that had proved to be particularly irksome in recent years. Opening the conference, chairman Lance Grainger, formerly head of the Dangerous Goods Branch at the UK Department of Transport, remarked that the underlying functions of the seminar remain the explanation of developments in the regulation of dangerous goods transport over the preceding 12 months and what lies in store for the coming year. As a result, delegates are assumed to have at least a basic knowledge of the subjects under discussion.
