The third annual European bulk and speciality chemical supply chain conference, Logichem, was held this past April in Frankfurt, Germany, with a selection of leading industry figures providing information and opinion on ways of optimising the supply chain. The proceedings generated many discussions on the way forward for the industry - for instance, should supply chain management be outsourced, or stay internal? - and ways to improve on logistics performance and reward. There was, however, a certain reticence to agree on issues involving the logistics supply chain. This may reflect nervousness on the part of the chemical industry, particularly in Europe, and concern that moving too swiftly in certain directions could cause more harm than good. It was suggested during discussions by one delegate that the complexities of the logis-tics supply chain need to be reduced by explor-ing the use of simpler technologies.
