Marine three years after introducing its simple system for capturing VOC emissions aboard ship, Norwegian engineering company Venturie is extending the application of the concept to lightering and FPSO operations. Since its introduction to the market in 2001, Venturie's volatile organic compound (VOC) collection system has proved to be a simple and cost-effective method of curbing emissions during the loading and transport of crude oil and petroleum products by tanker. Depending on the quality of the oil being carried, between 30 and 60 per cent of the normal losses can be captured, resulting in a cash saving of between $40,000 and $80,000 on a typical very large crude carrier voyage at an oil price of $30/bbl. With oil prices today heading towards $40/bbl, the Venturie system can pay for itself even more quickly - less than six months in some cases, depending on the cargo size, nature of the oil and length of the voyage.
