A new tough cargo hold coating from marine coatings supplier International Paint has been developed to combat 'shooting' damage, a little-acknowledged loading phenomena that could compromise a bulk carrier's safety. With loading rates of coal via speed belt conveyors, for example, exceeding 3,000t/hour, there is considerable potential for damage to cargo holds should loading be unnecessarily concentrated in one spot. In such cases, impact energies result in potential 'shoot- ing' damage to the cargo holds, where the cargo can be blasted or shot at the bulkheads of the hold. This causes potential coating detachment leading to more frequent repair, increased costs and potential downtime of vessels.
