Profile while the rest of the terminalling industry is becoming ever more concentrated, a few independents still survive. Charlotte Couse looks at how one such operator, Italy's PIR, uses its experience and market knowledge to continue to prosper alone. La Petrolifera Italo Rumena (PIR) is expanding. This is remarkable during a time when many of the smaller liquid bulk terminal operators are being snapped up by medium-sized independents. But PIR is branching out into other countries for the first time. "We have a project to build a terminal for oil products, chemicals and LPG in Albania," says Giordano Calore, terminal services marketing manager at the company. "We have now received authorisation from the local authority and plan to have the facility in operation by the end of 2006."
