There is increasingly little difference be-tween the modern product tanker and the general-purpose chemical tanker. A number of recent regulatory changes are likely to impact on both sectors and Lloyd's List saw the sense of combining its product and chemical tanker conferences in order to provide a forum for the discussion of matters of mutual interest. This report on the three-day event, which took place this past December in London, concentrates on the second and third days, which dealt with product/chemical and chemical tankers, respectively. Of all the issues that are currently impacting the market, perhaps the most significant is the revision of Annex I to the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution by Ships (MARPOL), which in its latest version will result in the scrapping of a large volume of single-hull tonnage in both the product and chemical tanker sectors, beginning next year.
