A dangerous mix

The potentially dangerous operation of co-mingling propane and butane onboard LPG tankers has become increasingly widespread in recent years. Risks include uncontrolled hazardous vapour release and cargo rollover, where cargo surges and boils, causing the ship to pitch and roll. However, little guidance has been published about this risky business besides a short warning note in the International Chamber of Shipping's (ICS) Tanker Safety Guide (Liquefied Gas). A new industry alert from the Society of International Gas Tanker and Terminal Operators (SIGTTO) seeks to explain the hazards involved and offers advice on how to conduct these sometimes necessary operations safely.
