Kleven Maritime has a long and distinguished history in shipbuilding but, as has been the case with many European builders in recent years, it has sailed more than its share of financial rough seas. In the first half of 2004, a lack of new orders led to restructuring in its three shipyards - Myklebust Verft, Kleven Floro and Kleven Verft - clustered some 250 km north of Bergen on the west coast of Norway. Kleven lost NKr 207.7m ($32m) that year, reduced its staff from 373 to 284 full-time employees and shifted activity to the construction of modules for Norwegian frigates. Kleven Verft, Myklebust and the conceptual arm, Kleven Design, experienced temporary layoffs and closures during this period.
