Now that all the work is done by the Sub-committees and their various working groups, the UN Committee of Experts meets for one day every two years, its chief objective being merely to rubber-stamp the amendments already agreed. The UN Committee of experts on the transport of dangerous goods and on the globally harmonised system of classification and labelling of chemicals held its second session in Geneva this past December 10. Experts from 24 states were present, along with observers and representatives from the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), the Commission of the European Communities, Algeria, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Switzerland and seven non-governmental organisations. Kim Headrick (Canada) was elected president with Sergio Benassai sitting as vice-president.
