Stolthaven Houston has managed to cut vessel waiting time down to an average of 5.5 hours thanks to an ongoing efficiency drive focused on optimising the coordination of operations at the ship/shore interface. To put that 5.5-hour wait into perspective, the company points out that the next best performing dock in the port of Houston has a vessel waiting that is double this. "And they had berth efficiency training," says operations manager David Coiley. "The wait was sometimes two or three days before that." Another terminal on the Houston Ship Channel, which will also remain nameless, is reported to make vessels wait up to eight days.
