Deregulation of Indonesia's oil and gas industries has spurred Oiltanking to take the plunge with a deepwater petroleum products terminal positioned to serve the Jakarta market Since Indonesia began to deregulate its upstream and downstream oil and gas industries in 2005, companies outside the country have swiftly moved in to compete in what is proving to be a fast-growing market. By the November 2005, Shell had opened Indonesia's first private retail fuel station in Tangerang, West Java. Now Oiltanking says it will be the first foreign third-party oil terminal operator to enter into the region. It joins chemical terminal operators Dovechem, Dover Chemical and Indoterminal Batamindah, which already have operations established there.
