California's Department of Toxic Substance Control (DTSC) has alerted industry that it has begun a "comprehensive effort" to improve the quality of information it collects. Its Hazardous Waste Tracking System depends on information supplied by waste generators, transporters, and treatment, storage and disposal facilities on their Uniform Hazardous Waste Manifests. DTSC says it is finding "significant errors" on a large number of these manifests, making it "increasingly difficult" to ensure that hazardous waste has reached its proper destination. Some of the most common errors include illegible copies, particularly the generator copy, which is a photocopy of page six of the six-part manifest form; and incomplete, missing or inaccurate information, such as handler identification numbers, waste information, management method codes, waste codes, units of measurement and waste amounts.
