Unreported spill costs BNSF

BNSF has pleaded no contest to criminal charges after failing to report at chemical spill near the Port of Los Angeles in June 2012. The railroad has agreed to pay $140,000 in penalties, medical expenses and emergency response costs. The incident happened when several drums in a freight container leaked phenol, cresylic acid and other corrosive products. The fumes from the spill caused one officer of the Los Angeles Port Police to need hospital treatment.
