The things that are most delicate become objects only later. This is true for many things that are taken for granted and only mature into being recognized once they are lost, and they are usually lost the moment that they are drawn into comparisons that take away their naive givenness. The air that we breathe without thinking, the places saturated with moods in which we unknowingly exist both contained and containing, the unremarkable because obvious atmospheres in which we live, move, and have our being-these are all thematic latecomers because until they were brought to our consciousness they provided, like perennial natures or goods, an a priori silent background to our being and presence.
