Crest True Value Hardware, a 50-year-old family-run business in Brooklyn, New York, USA, knows how to brighten up its store, appeal to the local community and bag lots of free publicity. It holds an annual in-store art show, with local artists submitting more than 100 hardware-inspired pieces of art. These are displayed among the store's normal products. "Sometimes people aren't sure if a piece is art or hardware," says the store's 80-year-old owner, Manuel Franquinha. "The only way you can tell for sure is by the price. Hardware is a lot cheaper." The price of the artwork ranges from $20 to $9,800, but there are no tags on the pieces - potential buyers have to ask the price at the till.
