Dikes along the German coastline have been proved as safe constructions with minor of maintenance. Nevertheless, estimated secular rise and shortage of suitable marine clay have been reasons to develop a concept for the structural design of the cohesive cover layer. Basic parameters of hydrodynamic impacts and soil properties are considered in failure equations for well defined failure situations according to EAK 2002, like a sufficient resistance against infiltration and breaker impact. The concept allows an optimisation of the structure as well as an analysis of the state of safety for existing dikes.
