The river Elbe is one of the most frequently used waterways of the world. For centuries numerous ships have sunk here. This is the reason that a huge number of wrecks or load components have been collected on the sole of the river Elbe. The Waterway and Shipping Board Cuxhaven in collaboration with the Waterway and Shipping Board Hamburg has commissioned a geophysical survey of underwater obstacles. The aim was to determine whether the obstacles had an effect on the planned deepening of the river Elbe. The information of the different investigation methods were combined to provide a comprehensive overall picture of the underwater objects. For the recovery of these obstacles backhoe dredgers were used. Monitoring the dredging process was carried out by real-time supervision methods. Investigations and construction work took place in the years 2011-2013. The costs amounted to more than 9 mill. €.
