All geared container ships with a nominal TEU capacity between 950 and 1.999 TEU are classified into feeder segment III. Vessels of this kind are usually steaming on regional or interregional feeder and short sea services. Ships in this size range are deployed worldwide on routes calling at ports having insufficient terminal infrastructure in particular a lack of gantry cranes. In 2016, about 673 ships matching this definition could be found around the world with focus areas in sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia and the Caribbean.
