New yard for a future in shipbuilding

Although Bijlsma has been building ships at Wartena since 1782, biographers refer to 1903 as the shipyard's official founding date. For the last 94 years, four generations of Bijlsmas have managed the traditional and today main shipyard in Wartena. This company has developed from a small boatyard into a major shipyard for coasters in the north of the Netherlands near Groningen. When the size of coasters grew, Bijlsma had to decide either for remaining in Wartena building smaller ships there or finding a new ground for a larger yard to follow the requirements of their clients and the market. They went to Lemmer, where the new Scheepswerf Bijlsma Lemmer B.V. was opened just one year ago.
