The ferry sector is the perfect testing ground for remote and autonomous vessel technology. Projects in Norway and Finland have demonstrated the technical feasibilty. Wärtsilä has been the first to test its autonomy solution on board a Norled ferry. Rolls-Royce and Finferries were second to report successful tests followed by ABB. The automation company has not gone all the way and decided to steer a passenger ferry remotely, an important step for acquainting people with the idea of a captain not being on board but in a control center on shore.
