Vadmel: Fulling Woolen Cloth the Traditional Way

In the spring of 2002, a group of American weavers visited Norway to learn to create vadmel cloth woven with yarns from Spelsau sheep. In the beautiful atmosphere of the Vesaas farm in the Vinje community in Telemark, we learned the centuries-old techniques that produce a uniquely felt-like texture. The cloth called vadmel in Norwegian is also known as vadmal (in Swedish), loden (in German), and fulled woolen cloth (in English). These twill-woven fabrics can be made in different weights and fulled to meet the needs of a wide variety of garments.
