Back in 2010, Manchester airport came to the conclusion that its ramp environment could be improved. There was no single driver behind this decision, but rather a mixture of reasons. Insurance claims (and all the concomitant paperwork and inconvenience), together with incidents on the ramp, growing levels of CO_2 emissions, fleet age and the latter's overall level of efficiency, were all factors that prompted the debate. A decision was subsequently taken to set up a thorough GSE inspection regime, one that would literally leave no unit unturned: from dollies and trailers to buses, everything on the ramp (and any vehicle used both airside and landside) would be included within the scheme. And so a CAP 642 vehicle/equipment strategy got underway...
