U.N. lodges sanctions against African traffickers

The U.N. Security Council has issued sanctions against illegal wildlife traffickers in Africa, a move that wildlife advocates said is a major shift in policy. Yesterday, the Security Council approved a resolution to renew an arms embargo, travel bans and asset freezes against armed groups in the Congo. The resolution includes sanctions against people who are aiding groups "through illicit trade of natural resources, including gold or wildlife as well as wildlife products."
