Northeast Corridor upgrades could boost environment -- report

Modernizing the Northeast Corridor rail line would lead to lower energy usage and greenhouse gas production and more economic activity and mobility, a draft environmental report found. The report released yesterday by the Federal Railroad Administration examined three choices for upgrading the rail line between now and 2040. The three choices were compared with an alternative of maintaining current service. Simply leaving the rail line as is would cost about $20 billion over the next 25 years, while the most ambitious plan -- involving an underground rail tunnel from the Long Island coast to Connecticut -- would come in around $290 billion, FRA officials said.
