In a potentially precedent-setting decision, a federal judge yesterday struck down an Idaho law that criminalized undercover investigations into agricultural and meat-producing practices as unconstitutional. The court held that Idaho's effort to curtail whistleblowing employees as well as investigations by animal rights groups and journalists violated free speech protections. Idaho enacted the "ag-gag" law in February 2014 after a video was released showing an Idaho dairy farm's workers repeatedly beating, kicking and jumping on cows, as well as moving them with tractors against their will.
