Nation doles out $2.5M to protect South China Sea

China has set up a 15 million yuan ($2.25 million) environmental protection fund for its developments in the South China Sea, the Xinhua state news agency said today. The Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague, Netherlands, ruled earlier this month that China does not have historic rights to the sea, which makes up more than one-tenth of global fishery production. The court said China's construction of artificial islands and land reclamation had damaged coral reefs and other delicate marine ecosystems in the area. China has repeatedly denied claims of environmental damage.
